About California Family Institute

A center for relational health.

California Family Institute (CFI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit counseling and training center in Costa Mesa. We expand access to mental and relational health care through sliding-scale therapy and train future clinicians in narrative, collaborative, and socially responsive practice.

Founded to respond to the significant gaps in mental health access—California ranks in the bottom third nationally for access to care, with over 60% of people with mental illness not receiving treatment—CFI makes care affordable and community-centered.

Our Mission

Bridging the gap

We exist to bridge the gap for people who cannot access mental and relational health services in Orange County and beyond.

And to develop the mental health leaders of the future—so access disparities shrink over time.

Our Approach

Story-centered care

  • Narrative foundation

Grounded in narrative therapy, informed by collaborative and postmodern practices.

  • Non-pathologizing care

Strengths-based work that honors people as experts of their own lives.

  • Relational lens

Considering family, community, and social context in everything we do.

  • Culturally responsive

Inclusive practice across gender, sexuality, age, class, and background.

  • Support systems included

With consent, we welcome the people who matter most in your life.

We are a community of helpers, learners, and storytellers.

Every story matters here.
